  1. Brown the beef in a large heavy pot, add the chopped onions and garlic and cook until transparent.
  2. Add all the other ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 2-3 hours, adding water as necessary. I usually end up adding about 2 cups of water in all.
